South Africa’s Constitutional Court Rules Zuma Ineligible for Parliament Due to 15-Month Sentence
May 20, 2024, 08:27 AM
South Africa’s Constitutional Court has ruled that former President Jacob Zuma is ineligible to run for Parliament in this month's elections. The ruling overturns a previous decision by the Electoral Court that had allowed Zuma to contest. The Constitutional Court found that Zuma's 15-month sentence for contempt of court disqualifies him under Section 47(1)(e) of the Constitution. The decision was announced on Monday at 10:00. Zuma, who was set to run for the Umkhonto weSizwe Party, is also disqualified from standing for election to the National Assembly.
