South Africa Prepares for May 29 Election as Ramaphosa's ANC Faces Possible Loss of Majority
May 26, 2024, 02:30 AM
South Africa is gearing up for a pivotal general election on May 29, 2024, with the African National Congress (ANC) facing its most significant challenge since the end of apartheid. For the first time in 30 years, the ANC, historically led by Nelson Mandela, may lose its majority. The party, which once garnered nearly 70% of the vote, is now struggling amid widespread dissatisfaction over corruption, unemployment, and power cuts. President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to 'do better' and has urged voters to turn out in large numbers. The ANC held its final major rally at FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, as other parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), also made their final pushes. Over 27 million South Africans are registered to vote, and the outcome could force the ANC to co-govern for the first time. Special votes will be cast on Monday and Tuesday. Investors are wary of any ANC coalition with radical parties.
