Malkin Becomes 48th Player to Reach 500 NHL Goals; Crosby Hits 1,600 Points
Oct 17, 2024, 01:15 AM
Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored his 500th career NHL goal, becoming the 48th player in league history and the fourth active player to reach this milestone. He joins Alex Ovechkin as the only Russian-born players to achieve this feat and is the 20th player to score 500 goals with a single team. The goal came as a penalty expired during the Penguins' game against the Buffalo Sabres, giving Pittsburgh a 4-3 lead with 16:34 remaining. Sidney Crosby provided a between-the-legs back pass to set up Malkin's goal, bringing his own career point total to 1,600, making him the 10th player in NHL history to reach this mark. Teammates cleared the bench to celebrate with Malkin as the home crowd gave him a standing ovation, chanting "Geno, Geno!" Malkin is the third Penguins player to reach 500 goals, joining Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby.
