Former Liberal Minister Kevin Andrews Dies at 69 After Cancer Battle
Dec 14, 2024, 01:01 AM
Former Liberal Party stalwart and long-serving member of parliament, Kevin Andrews, has died at the age of 69 after a year-long battle with cancer. Andrews, who represented the seat of Menzies in Melbourne's east for over three decades, passed away peacefully overnight with his wife Margie by his side, according to a family statement shared by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott. He served in prominent cabinet positions under the Howard and Abbott governments, including as Minister for Defence, Social Services, Immigration, Ageing, and Workplace Relations. Known for his conservative values and opposition to euthanasia, abortion, same-sex marriage, and stem cell research, Andrews was a significant figure in the Liberal Party's right wing. His family expressed their pride in his service to the country, community, and party, and noted that he was working on his memoirs until his death, which they plan to publish posthumously.
