Israel's Cabinet to Approve Ceasefire with Hezbollah Amid U.S. Mediation
Nov 25, 2024, 12:29 PM
Israel and Lebanon are nearing a U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to convene the security cabinet at 5:30 PM on Tuesday in Tel Aviv to approve the deal, after meeting with coalition party leaders. U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein has informed Lebanese officials that an agreement could be announced within hours. The proposed agreement includes a 60-day transition period during which the Israeli military would withdraw from southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army would deploy, and Hezbollah would move heavy weapons north. The ceasefire would also allow Israel to retain the right to conduct military operations on the Lebanon-Syria border. Officials from both Israel and Lebanon have indicated that the deal could be finalized within days, pending cabinet approval.
