Far-Right Parties Make Significant Gains in EU Elections, EPP Holds Majority in Germany and Austria
Jun 9, 2024, 06:53 PM
Exit polls and early projections from the European Parliament elections indicate significant gains for far-right parties across several European countries, including Germany, Austria, France, and the Netherlands. The centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) is expected to maintain its position as the largest group in the parliament, with approximately 181 seats. Right-wing blocs are projected to secure around 133 seats combined, while the Greens are estimated to win about 53 seats. The national-conservative European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the right-wing Identity and Democracy (ID) groups are also expected to increase their representation, with ECR gaining 5 seats and ID gaining 8 seats. The centre-left Socialists and Democrats (S&D) are projected to have 136 seats, while the Liberal Renew Europe (RE) group is expected to secure 89 seats. These results reflect a broader trend of voter dissatisfaction and a shift towards more extreme political positions in the EU.
