Detroit Tigers Sign Two-Time All-Star Gleyber Torres to $15M Deal to Play Second Base
Dec 27, 2024, 03:29 PM
The Detroit Tigers have officially signed infielder Gleyber Torres to a one-year, $15 million contract, including a $500,000 assignment bonus. Torres, 28, is expected to play second base, with Colt Keith shifting to first base. Tigers President Scott Harris stated that Keith is enthusiastic about the move. The infield now features several players competing for playing time, including Trey Sweeney, Jace Jung, and Javier Baez. The addition of Torres, a two-time All-Star with a strong batting record but poor defensive metrics at second base, adds depth to the roster. Torres appeared in 154 games for the New York Yankees in 2024, batting .257 with 15 home runs, 65 walks, and 136 strikeouts. His signing effectively ends his eight-year tenure with the Yankees, who had sought to move him to third base—a position change he declined. To accommodate Torres on the roster, the Tigers designated left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn for assignment. The role of Spencer Torkelson may shift to designated hitter or backup first base as a result of these changes.
