Colombian Government Reaches Deal to End Truckers' Strike Amid Diesel Price Hike and Fuel Shortages
Sep 6, 2024, 11:33 AM
Amid protests and road blockades in Colombia, the mayor of Bogota announced that the capital has four days of jet fuel left and six days of regular gasoline. The end of diesel subsidies raised retail diesel fuel prices by 45 cents per gallon, leading to widespread protests. Colombian police intervened to break up the road blockades, which had caused significant disruptions, food shortages, and increased food costs. President Gustavo Petro's disapproval rating reached a high of 66% in August. On Friday, the Colombian government reached a deal with truckers to suspend the road blockades by agreeing to raise diesel prices by less than initially planned, effectively ending the strike that had paralyzed the country.
