Telegram to Disclose User Data to Authorities Amid CEO's Legal Troubles, Following Arrest
Sep 23, 2024, 02:55 PM
Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, has announced on September 23 that the messaging app will begin disclosing users' IP addresses and phone numbers to relevant authorities in response to valid legal requests. This decision comes amid Durov's legal troubles in France, where he faces charges related to cryptography and cryptocurrencies. Following Durov's arrest, Telegram has updated its privacy policy to comply with international legal requirements and has started cooperating with French intelligence services. This cooperation, reported by Liberation, has led to requests from other countries, including an EU country that received information about a Telegram group used to order about a hundred murders. Durov stated that these measures should deter criminals and help identify those violating Telegram's rules.
