Sweden Orders 44 Leopard 2A8 Tanks for 22 Billion SEK, Upgrades 66 Existing Tanks; Deliveries Start 2028
Jan 9, 2025, 11:16 AM
Sweden has ordered 44 new Leopard 2A8 tanks and plans to upgrade 66 existing Leopard 2 tanks in a deal valued at approximately 22 billion SEK ($1.97 billion). The agreement with the German-French defense equipment manufacturer KNDS aims to enhance Sweden's defense capabilities amid rising security concerns. Defense Minister Pal Jonson emphasized the necessity of this investment, stating it is crucial for doubling the size of Sweden's army to meet parliamentary objectives, expanding to a force of four brigades. The new tanks, designated as Stridsvagn 123, are expected to be delivered starting in 2028, with the upgrade process for the existing Stridsvagn 122 tanks, which will be re-designated as Stridsvagn 123A and 123B, set to begin in 2028 as well. The upgraded tanks will include a Rheinmetall Rh-120/L55 gun, and the entire project is slated for completion by 2031. This move is part of Sweden's broader military modernization efforts, which also include the renovation of other combat vehicles, such as the CV90 infantry fighting vehicles.
