New Georgia Project, Founded by Stacey Abrams, Fined $300,000 for 16 Campaign Finance Violations
Jan 15, 2025, 08:47 PM
A voting rights group founded by Stacey Abrams, the New Georgia Project, has agreed to pay a $300,000 fine for illegally supporting her 2018 gubernatorial campaign. The fine, the largest ever assessed for campaign finance violations in Georgia, was imposed by the State Ethics Commission after the group admitted to 16 violations of state law. These violations included failing to register as an independent political committee and not disclosing approximately $4.2 million in contributions and $3.2 million in expenditures related to Abrams' campaign. The New Georgia Project also supported other Democratic candidates in 2018 and a 2019 ballot initiative. At the time of the violations, the group was led by Raphael Warnock, who later became a U.S. Senator. The fine concludes a six-year investigation into the group's activities.
