Dutch and US Intelligence Warn of Russian Disinformation Campaigns Targeting US Election in Favor of Trump
Jul 10, 2024, 09:48 AM
Intelligence agencies from the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States, including the FBI and Dutch services AIVD and MIVD, have issued a warning about Russian state-sponsored actors using covert Meliorator software to conduct disinformation campaigns. The Dutch intelligence services have stated that it is 'very likely' that the Russian government is involved in developing software to create bogus social media profiles aimed at spreading fake news and influencing American public debate. Additionally, Dutch authorities, in collaboration with their partners, have taken down hundreds of fake social media accounts set up by Russia. The disinformation campaigns are reportedly aimed at manipulating the public and influencing the outcome of the US presidential election in favor of Donald Trump. CNN’s Steve Hall has also commented that Russia will try to meddle in the US election in the direction of 'their favorite candidate' Donald Trump, according to spies.
