Nigeria Withdraws from AFCON Qualifier After Super Eagles Stranded in Libya for 20 Hours
Oct 14, 2024, 11:23 AM
Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, faced severe challenges ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya. The team was stranded at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya for over 20 hours without access to food, water, or proper facilities. This ordeal led to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) deciding to withdraw the team from the match scheduled for Tuesday. Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, forward Victor Boniface, and striker Victor Osimhen condemned the treatment, describing the conditions as 'inhumane.' The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in touch with the Nigerian Mission in Libya to address the situation, and the NFF is making arrangements to evacuate the team back to Nigeria. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed deep concern over the incident and has begun an investigation into the alleged maltreatment. The Libyan Football Federation attributed the delay to routine air traffic and logistical challenges, denying any foul play. The Nigerian government has summoned Libya’s Chargé d’affaires to resolve the issue. The Nigerian Sports Minister also condemned the treatment, and a bus was eventually provided for the stranded team.
