Australia has signed a landmark security and economic treaty with the Pacific island nation of Nauru, aiming to counter China's growing influence in the region. The AU$140 million ($90 million) agreement includes AU$100 million in direct budget support and AU$40 million for policing and security over five years. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Nauru's President David Adeang in Canberra to sign the treaty, which grants Australia effective veto powers over Nauru's security and infrastructure partnerships.
