Greta Gerwig's 'Narnia' Set for Two-Week IMAX Run in 90 Countries on Thanksgiving 2026 Before Streaming on Netflix on Christmas Day
Jan 17, 2025, 12:49 PM
Netflix has agreed to a precedent-setting deal to release Greta Gerwig's adaptation of C.S. Lewis' 'The Chronicles of Narnia' in approximately 1,000 IMAX theaters across 90 countries worldwide on Thanksgiving Day 2026. The film will have an exclusive two-week run in IMAX within a 4-week window of global exclusivity before debuting on Netflix on Christmas Day 2026. This big-budget film marks a significant shift for Netflix, which typically avoids extensive theatrical releases. The deal was negotiated between Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond, and Gerwig's team. The film will be shot using both IMAX and regular cameras to cater to the dual release strategy, and will be marketed as a 'Netflix/Imax' title. Gerwig, who previously directed the blockbuster 'Barbie,' has been attached to the project since 2020, aiming to bring a fresh take on the beloved fantasy series.
