Moldova Votes 50.3% 'Yes' for EU Amid Russian Interference Claims
Oct 21, 2024, 09:56 AM
Moldova has narrowly voted in favor of enshrining the country's European Union aspirations in its constitution, preliminary results showed. The referendum, held on Sunday, saw the 'No' vote leading initially, with 57% opposed at 33% of ballots counted. However, as more votes were tallied, the 'Yes' campaign gained a slim lead. With over 99% of the votes counted, 50.3% of Moldovans supported the amendment, while 49.7% opposed it, a margin of just a few thousand votes. The voting was 'too close to call' early Monday morning, reflecting deep divisions within the small nation. President Maia Sandu cited 'unprecedented' outside interference during the referendum, amid accusations of Russian meddling. The narrow victory puts Moldova on a path toward joining the EU's single market despite pressure from Russia.
