Turkey's MGR Mode-S SSR Radar, Developed with TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, Set for 2025 Operation
Jan 11, 2025, 11:15 AM
Turkey has successfully completed testing of its first domestically developed civil air surveillance radar, known as the National Surveillance Radar (MGR) Mode-S SSR. Developed entirely by Turkish engineers in collaboration with TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, the MGR is set to enhance air traffic control services. The radar system, which passed its continuity tests, is planned to be operational in the first quarter of 2025. It features a primary surveillance system capable of monitoring up to 112 kilometers and a secondary system that can track up to 1,000 aircraft simultaneously over a range of 370 kilometers. The MGR is expected to increase the efficiency of air traffic control and reduce Turkey's reliance on foreign technology. Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the radar will be integrated with air traffic control systems operated by the State Airports Authority (DHMİ), marking a significant milestone in Turkey's domestic production efforts in the aviation sector. The system will enable the monitoring of the entire 1 million square kilometers of Turkish airspace with indigenous technology.
