George Russell Wins Belgian GP, Disqualified for Underweight Car; Hamilton Inherits Victory
Jul 28, 2024, 04:55 PM
George Russell initially won the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, leading a Mercedes 1-2 finish with Lewis Hamilton in second place. Russell's victory was achieved through a strategic one-stop race, holding off Hamilton and Oscar Piastri of McLaren, who finished third. This would have been Russell's third career win. However, post-race technical checks revealed that Russell's car was 1.5kg underweight, leading to his disqualification. Consequently, Lewis Hamilton was declared the winner, marking his 105th career victory. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the mistake, apologizing for the technical breach that cost Russell his win.
