VisitBrazil's Lula, 79, Undergoes Successful Embolization in São Paulo to Prevent Brain Bleeding
Dec 12, 2024, 11:58 AM
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, aged 79, underwent a second medical procedure on Thursday morning in São Paulo to address persistent bleeding on the surface of his brain, following an emergency surgery earlier in the week to drain a hematoma. The procedure at the Hospital Sírio-Libanês was described as a success by his medical team. Lula, a member of the Workers' Party (PT), is currently awake, talking, and in stable condition in the ICU. The intervention, which lasted less than an hour, involved an embolization of the middle meningeal artery to prevent future bleeding. Doctors have stated that the risk of new bleeding is now negligible, and Lula is expected to be discharged from the hospital early next week, with plans to return to Brasília. He will need relative rest for a few weeks but can gradually resume his normal activities. His medical team confirmed that he is neurologically perfect, with no brain damage or sequelae from the procedures.
