Nov 27, 2024, 11:47 AM
Former Conservative Party leader Lord William Hague of Richmond has been elected as the Chancellor of the University of Oxford. Hague secured 12,609 votes in the final stage of the election, defeating Lady Elish Angiolini, who received 11,006 votes, and Peter Mandelson. He becomes the 160th recorded Chancellor in the University’s history, a role that dates back over 800 years. Hague is the fifth former Conservative Party leader to hold this position, following leaders who also served as UK Prime Ministers, including the Duke of Wellington and Harold Macmillan. Known as a champion of academic freedom, Hague will serve a ten-year term as Chancellor.
