Judge Juan Merchan to Rule on Overturning Trump’s Hush Money Conviction
Nov 11, 2024, 01:33 PM
A New York judge, Justice Juan Merchan, is set to decide this week whether to overturn President-elect Donald Trump's criminal conviction on charges involving hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels. This decision follows a Supreme Court ruling in July that granted presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution. The ruling could potentially pave the way to largely free Trump from the four criminal cases that once threatened his political career. Merchan will issue a written opinion by Tuesday, which could either order a new trial or dismiss the indictment entirely. The decision comes just a week after Trump’s resounding election victory. The judge also must decide whether to go ahead with sentencing Trump on November 26 as currently scheduled.
