U.S. Approves $3.64 Billion Sale of 1,200 AMRAAM Missiles to Japan by RTX Corporation

The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Japan of up to 1,200 AIM-120D-3 and AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), along with related equipment and services, for an estimated cost of $3.64 billion. The sale, announced by the Pentagon, includes missile components such as propulsion sections, warheads, and guidance sections, as well as support equipment and technical support. The principal contractor for this sale is RTX Corporation, located in Tucson, Arizona. This transaction is aimed at enhancing Japan's defense capabilities to meet current and future threats, particularly in defending its homeland and U.S. personnel stationed there. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of this potential sale on January 2, 2025.
