Brazil's Federal Police Indict Bolsonaro, Ex-Ministers in Coup Attempt; 37 Charged Including 25 Military
Nov 21, 2024, 06:43 PM
Brazil's federal police have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others on charges of attempting a coup d'état following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election. The 37 indicted individuals include former ministers Walter Braga Netto, Augusto Heleno, Anderson Torres, and Valdemar Costa Neto, president of Bolsonaro's Liberal Party. Also among the accused are Alexandre Ramagem, former head of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency, and Bolsonaro's aide, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid. The indictment, submitted to the Supreme Federal Court and forwarded to Justice Alexandre de Moraes, alleges that 25 of the indicted are military personnel. Charges involve attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law, plotting a coup, and engaging in a criminal organization. The investigation alleges they sought to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming office after his electoral victory. The federal police's 884-page report concludes a nearly two-year investigation into the alleged coup attempt.
