Bolsonaro, Ex-Ministers, and 25 Military Officers Indicted for Attempted Coup After 2022 Election
Nov 21, 2024, 06:39 PM
On Thursday, November 21, 2024, Brazil's federal police indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others, including high-ranking officials, on charges of attempting a coup to overturn the 2022 election results. Among those indicted are former Defense Minister General Walter Braga Netto, General Augusto Heleno, Deputy Alexandre Ramagem, former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres, Bolsonaro's ex-aide Lieutenant-Colonel Mauro Cid, and the president of the Liberal Party, Valdemar Costa Neto. The indictments, which include charges of attempting to abolish the democratic rule of law, coup d'état, and forming a criminal organization, also encompass 25 military personnel. The investigation report, comprising more than 800 pages, has been sent to Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The charges stem from alleged plans to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming office after his electoral victory, including a plot that proposed the assassination of Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
