Japan Sees Record 36.87 Million Foreign Visitors in 2024, Spending Hits 8.14 Trillion Yen
Jan 15, 2025, 07:22 AM
Japan set a new record for foreign visitor numbers in 2024, with approximately 36.87 million tourists visiting the country, surpassing the previous high of 31.88 million set in 2019 before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The surge in visitors, which included a 28% increase in December to a record 3.49 million, was attributed to the weakening of the yen, making Japan an attractive destination. The total spending by these visitors reached a record high of 8.14 trillion yen, a 53.4% increase from 2023. The increase in tourism was driven by heightened travel demand during school holidays, Christmas, and the New Year period. The breakdown of visitors by country included significant numbers from South Korea, China, Taiwan, and the United States.
