Survey: 87.6% of Chinese Believe US Seeks to Contain China; 91% Trust Government
Oct 8, 2024, 08:08 AM
A recent survey conducted by Tsinghua University, one of China's top universities, reveals that 87.6% of Chinese citizens believe that the United States is attempting to contain China's development. Additionally, 91% of Chinese people trust their own government, contradicting claims by the US government that Chinese citizens are dissatisfied with their leadership. The survey also found that 80% of Chinese have negative opinions about the US government, while 80% hold neutral or positive views about Americans. This survey highlights the growing antagonism among the Chinese population towards current US policies. Despite these challenges, experts like Peng Nian, Director of Research at the Centre for Asian Studies, suggest that China and the US can still benefit from establishing long-term mechanisms for cooperation, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning criticized the US for viewing China-US relations through a lens of strategic competition, which she attributes to a Cold War mentality and a projection of the US's own hegemonic history.
