21-Year-Old Carlos Alcaraz Reaches First French Open Final After Defeating Jannik Sinner in Five Sets
Jun 7, 2024, 04:00 PM
Carlos Alcaraz has advanced to his first French Open final after defeating Jannik Sinner in a thrilling five-set match. Alcaraz, at 21 years old, becomes the youngest male player in history to reach Grand Slam finals on all three surfaces: clay, grass, and hard court. The semifinal match, which lasted just over 4 hours, saw Alcaraz overcoming a challenging start, with Sinner initially leading 6-2, 2-0. Alcaraz managed to turn the tide, winning the match 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. This victory marks Alcaraz's third Grand Slam final, having previously won the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023. Alcaraz, who has a 10-1 record in 5-setters, also dealt with cramps in the third set. Sinner, who will become the new World No. 1 on Monday, also put up a strong performance but ultimately fell short. Alcaraz is now set to face either Casper Ruud or Alexander Zverev in the final.
