BC NDP Wins Majority with 47 Seats After Narrow Surrey-Guildford Victory
Oct 28, 2024, 08:37 PM
The British Columbia New Democratic Party (NDP) has secured a narrow victory in the provincial election, clinching a slim majority after mail-in and absentee ballots were counted. With 47 seats, the NDP surpassed the threshold required to form a majority government, while the BC Conservative Party holds 44 seats and the Green Party has 2 seats. The pivotal riding of Surrey-Guildford was decisive, where the NDP overtook the Conservatives by as few as four votes at one point, eventually leading by 18 votes with only 43 ballots left to count. Due to the razor-thin margins, automatic judicial recounts are increasingly likely in some ridings. Media outlets, including the CBC, projected that the NDP, led by Premier David Eby, will form the next government, fending off a surge by the Conservatives.
