Chinese Diplomats and Pro-China Groups Harass Protesters in San Francisco During November 2023 APEC Summit
Sep 3, 2024, 04:19 PM
A major investigation by the Washington Post has revealed that Chinese diplomats and pro-China diaspora groups based in the United States organized demonstrations in San Francisco during Xi Jinping's visit to the city in November 2023 for the APEC summit. These demonstrations harassed and silenced protesters opposed to Beijing’s policies, including through violence. Videos show at least four Chinese diplomats from the consulates in Los Angeles and San Francisco among the crowd of pro-CCP protesters, sometimes directly interacting with aggressive actors over four days of protests from November 14-17. The FBI is reportedly investigating these incidents, which highlight the Chinese Communist Party's willingness to extend its repression into the United States and target people exercising their First Amendment rights. The demonstrators also hired private security guards from the area.
