US Sanctions Hungarian Fidesz Party Official Antal Rogan Under Global Magnitsky Act for Corruption
Jan 7, 2025, 04:35 PM
The United States has imposed sanctions on Antal Rogan, a senior Hungarian government official and member of the Fidesz party, for his alleged involvement in corruption. Rogan, who serves as the Minister in Charge of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Cabinet Office, is accused by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of orchestrating schemes to control strategic sectors of the Hungarian economy and diverting proceeds to himself and loyalists of the Fidesz party. The sanctions were enacted under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, targeting individuals involved in serious human rights abuses and corruption. OFAC stated that Rogan's actions have contributed to a broader climate of impunity in Hungary, where state elements have been captured by oligarchs and undemocratic actors. The sanctions block all property and interests in property of Rogan that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons.
