LaMonica McIver Wins NJ-10 Special Election by 65.2 Points, Fills Late Rep. Payne's Seat
Sep 19, 2024, 12:59 AM
Democrat LaMonica McIver has won the special election in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District, defeating Republican Carmen Bucco. The election was held to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Donald Payne Jr. earlier this year. McIver, the Newark City Council President, becomes the eighth Congresswoman in New Jersey's history. She secured the victory with a significant lead, winning by 65.2 points. This district, which includes Newark, Jersey City, and the Oranges, had previously been won by Joe Biden by 62.5 points in the 2020 election. Early and mail votes showed McIver leading 87% to 9%, and as more votes came in, she maintained a lead of 84 to 13 and 83% to 14%. At 8:00 PM ET, McIver's lead was 69.3 points. The special election saw a slight Democratic overperformance in the predominantly urban district, which is 52% black and 22% Hispanic.
