General Sir Mike Jackson, Ex-British Army Chief Who Averted 'World War Three', Dies at 80
Oct 15, 2024, 11:18 PM
General Sir Mike Jackson, known as 'The Prince of Darkness', the former head of the British Army, has died at the age of 80. Jackson served with distinction for over 40 years, including involvement in some of the most intense conflicts of the last 50 years. He culminated his career as Chief of the General Staff and was once Britain's most senior soldier. Jackson was known for his leadership during key military operations, including the Kosovo conflict, where he famously refused an order from his NATO superior, General Wesley Clark, to confront Russian forces, stating, "I won't start World War Three for you." He also led the British Army during the Iraq invasion and gave evidence to the Saville Inquiry following Bloody Sunday. A former Para, he was respected as a remarkable communicator with a fierce intellect, regarded as an outstanding, inspirational, and charismatic leader. He passed away on October 15, surrounded by his family. He will be greatly missed in his hometown of Hungerford, in Great Bedwyn, and far beyond. Tributes have been paid by colleagues, politicians, and military organizations, acknowledging his significant contributions to the armed forces and his impact on those who served under him.
