FDA Proposes Rule to Limit Nicotine in Cigarettes, Aiming to Avert Millions of Deaths
Jan 15, 2025, 03:26 PM
On Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed a far-reaching new rule to limit the level of nicotine in cigarettes and certain other combusted tobacco products, aiming to make them minimally or non-addictive. If finalized, the United States would be the first country to impose such a limit. The proposal seeks to reduce the addictiveness of cigarettes, lessen health impacts, and potentially avert 4.3 million deaths by the end of the century. The FDA noted that 22nd Century's VLN cigarettes are currently the only compliant product with the proposed standards. Officials held a virtual press conference to discuss the initiative, which has long been sought by anti-smoking advocates but is unlikely to go into effect anytime soon.
