Warner Bros. Discovery and TBS Sue NBA Over Breach of Contract, Amazon TV Rights Deal
Jul 26, 2024, 05:07 PM
Warner Bros. Discovery, along with its TBS division, has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the National Basketball Association (NBA) in New York County Supreme Court over the league's rejection of its matching bid for TV broadcasting rights. The lawsuit alleges that the NBA violated a media-rights agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery's TNT sports division by striking a deal with Amazon's Prime Video. The media giant claims that the NBA did not honor its contractual right to match offers from third parties. This legal action comes after a 40-year partnership between Warner Bros. Discovery and the NBA, and the company is seeking to secure the media rights that were awarded to Amazon. Warner Bros. Discovery has also tasked PR firm Edelman to argue that putting games on Amazon is anti-consumer and harms a large segment of basketball fans.
