MSNBC President Rashida Jones Steps Down Amid Comcast Spin-Off, Rebecca Kutler Named Interim
Jan 14, 2025, 03:45 PM
Rashida Jones, the president of MSNBC, has announced her decision to step down after a four-year tenure leading the cable news network. Her departure comes as Comcast, MSNBC's parent company, prepares to spin off the network into a new publicly traded company. Rebecca Kutler, who joined MSNBC in 2022 from CNN and serves as the senior vice president of content strategy, will take over as interim president. Jones, the first Black executive to lead a major U.S. television news network, made her announcement to the staff on Tuesday, stating her decision was made over the holidays and expressing confidence in MSNBC's future. She had been with NBCU for 11 years and recruited Kutler to the network. The move occurs amid a period of industrywide pressure on cable news networks, with MSNBC experiencing a ratings dip following the 2024 presidential election, despite remaining the second most-watched cable news network behind Fox News.
