Kenya's Ruto Nominates Kindiki as Deputy President After Gachagua's Impeachment on Graft Charges
Oct 18, 2024, 07:21 AM
Kenyan President William Ruto has nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki to replace Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President following Gachagua's impeachment by Parliament on charges including graft, abuse of office, and insubordination. Gachagua was impeached last night while in hospital. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula confirmed receiving the President's nomination, stating, "I have received a message from the President on the nomination of Professor Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacancy in the office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya." The nomination follows Article 149(1) of the Constitution, which stipulates that within 14 days after a vacancy in the office of the Deputy President arises, the President shall nominate a person to fill the vacancy and the National Assembly shall vote on the nomination within 60 days after receiving it. Kindiki, a professor of law who previously served as Ruto's lawyer, requires parliamentary approval but is likely to pass due to Ruto's majority in the assembly.
