ASU Beats BYU 28-23 in Wild Finish as Fans Storm Field Twice
Nov 24, 2024, 12:11 AM
Arizona State University (ASU) secured a dramatic 28-23 victory over Brigham Young University (BYU), bolstering its Big 12 Championship aspirations. The Sun Devils, now 9-2 for the first time since 2014, led 21-0 late in the first half, highlighted by a 95-yard drive and a 61-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Leavitt to Xavier Guillory. BYU mounted a significant comeback, narrowing the deficit to 28-23 with 8:44 remaining and advancing into ASU territory with 1:20 left. In a chaotic conclusion, ASU fans prematurely stormed the field twice, dismantling the goal posts before the game's official end. Officials cleared the field and reinstated the goal posts for BYU's final play. BYU's Hail Mary pass was caught at the 2-yard line but failed to reach the end zone, sealing the win for ASU. Running back Cam Skattebo led the Sun Devils with 147 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. The victory results in a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings among ASU, BYU, and Colorado at 6-2, with Iowa State able to join with a win over Utah. ASU coach Kenny Dillingham's late-game decisions drew criticism amid the chaotic finish.
