Alsobrooks Defeats Hogan; Historic First as Two Black Women Elected to Senate
Nov 6, 2024, 03:02 AM
Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic Prince George's County Executive, has won the U.S. Senate race in Maryland, defeating Republican former Governor Larry Hogan, who conceded defeat. Alsobrooks becomes Maryland's first Black U.S. senator and, along with Lisa Blunt Rochester from Delaware, will be one of the first two Black women to serve concurrently in the U.S. Senate. This historic victory marks a significant milestone, as only two Black women have previously been elected to full terms in the Senate. Alsobrooks' victory likely secures Democratic control of the Senate. Hogan, a popular two-term governor who relied on his bipartisan record, hoped to sway voters in the predominantly Democratic state, but Alsobrooks maintained a robust polling lead and secured the seat vacated by retiring Senator Ben Cardin. The race was closely watched and became the costliest Senate race in Maryland's history.
