U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Florida Sports Betting Challenge, Seminole Tribe Retains Control Until 2051
Jun 17, 2024, 02:23 PM
The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) has rejected the petition by West Flagler Associates to hear a case challenging the legality of Florida's online sports betting model. This decision allows the Seminole Tribe to retain exclusive control over sports betting in Florida until 2051. The ruling is expected to accelerate the legalization of online sports betting in other states, including California. Additionally, Florida plans to legalize iGaming exclusively for the Seminole Tribe by 2026. The gaming compact is projected to bring in more than $4 billion to the state between now and 2029. The case was officially titled West Flagler Assoc., et al. v. Haaland, Sec. of Interior. The decision underscores that under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, a gaming compact cannot authorize statewide online sports betting on its own.
