Hampstead, NH Reports First EEE Death Since 2014
Aug 27, 2024, 06:20 PM
A resident from Hampstead, New Hampshire, has died after contracting the mosquito-borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, marking the state's first fatal case of the rare disease since 2014. Health officials confirmed that this is the first human case of EEE in New Hampshire in a decade. The virus, which causes brain swelling, is spread by mosquitoes and is considered rare but deadly. Two other individuals in the Northeast have also been infected with EEE this summer, prompting health warnings across several states in the region.
