UN Report: 85,000 Women Intentionally Killed in 2023; Africa Has Highest Femicides
Nov 25, 2024, 09:57 AM
A new report by UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reveals that in 2023, at least 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed worldwide, with an average of 140 women and girls killed every day by an intimate partner or family member—equating to one woman every 10 minutes. The report highlights that Africa has the highest number of femicides, followed by the Americas. The deadliest place for women continues to be at home, affecting all social categories and age groups. Released on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the report emphasizes that violence against women and girls is preventable. UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous stated, "Violence against women and girls is not inevitable—it is preventable."
