UN: Every 10 Minutes, a Woman Killed by Partner or Family in 2023
Nov 25, 2024, 12:02 PM
The United Nations has released a report revealing that in 2023, approximately 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed worldwide. Of these deaths, 60%—over 51,000 women—were caused by intimate partners or family members, equating to an average of 140 women and girls killed each day, or one every ten minutes. The report by UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlights that the home remains the most dangerous place for women. "Violence against women and girls is not inevitable—it is preventable," stated UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed on November 25, marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, promoting global action to end violence against women and girls.
