Greta Gerwig's upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis's 'The Chronicles of Narnia', with a budget of 200 million dollars, will have a unique release strategy, marking a significant shift for Netflix. The film is set to premiere exclusively in approximately 1,000 IMAX theaters across 90 countries worldwide on Thanksgiving Day 2026, before its debut on Netflix on Christmas Day 2026. This deal, described as a precedent-setting move, includes a four-week window of global exclusivity, with IMAX guaranteeing a two-week run, and the possibility of extending to a third week based on demand. The agreement also allows for potential screenings in non-IMAX theaters before the Netflix release. Netflix has committed to marketing the IMAX release as a major theatrical event, branding it as a 'Netflix/IMAX' title. This arrangement was negotiated between Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond, and Gerwig's team, reflecting a strategic compromise to satisfy both the filmmaker's vision and Netflix's streaming model. Gerwig's recent success with 'Barbie' likely played a role in securing this deal.
