Apple Inc. secretly collaborated with Chinese automotive giant BYD Co. around 2017 on Project Titan, its now-canceled electric vehicle initiative, to develop long-range, safety-focused battery systems. The partnership aimed to build customized battery systems using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, with Apple contributing expertise in advanced battery packs and heat management.
