Sony's Soneium Blockchain Launches, Aiming to Bridge Web2 and Web3 with 14 Million Users
Jan 14, 2025, 09:00 AM
Sony Group Corp. has launched Soneium, its Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, marking a significant step into the web3 space. Developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs in collaboration with Startale Group, the platform aims to bridge Web2 and Web3 technologies, focusing on enhancing creator economies and fan engagement. Utilizing the OP Stack from the Optimism Foundation, Soneium's testnet phase attracted over 14 million users and processed approximately 47 million transactions. The mainnet launch introduces tools for creators and businesses, including NFT-based fan engagement systems and an incubation program called Soneium Spark, which received over 1,700 applications and selected 32 projects. Sony plans to leverage Soneium across its subsidiaries for films, music, and games, exploring new frameworks for protecting creator rights and ensuring equitable value distribution between creators and fans.
