FCC Approves SpaceX, T-Mobile Deal for Starlink Direct-to-Cell Service in Remote Areas
Nov 26, 2024, 09:23 PM
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted SpaceX a commercial license to operate its Starlink Direct-to-Cell (DTC) service in the United States. This approval allows SpaceX to expand satellite-to-mobile communications, aiming to eliminate mobile dead zones by providing coverage through its satellite network. The license covers 7,500 Gen2 satellites operating at lower frequencies. SpaceX has launched 12 DTC satellites as part of its first commercial orbital satellite constellation, with over 320 DTC Starlink satellites now in orbit, sufficient for offering robust coverage. Additionally, the FCC has approved a license for SpaceX and T-Mobile to use Starlink to offer supplemental coverage from space, targeting remote areas. This move is seen as a significant step towards enhancing mobile connectivity in areas with limited or no terrestrial cellular service.
