SpaceX Completes Starlink Direct-to-Cell Satellite Constellation with 12 New Satellites, Bridging Gap for 2.6 Billion Disconnected
Nov 24, 2024, 09:21 PM
SpaceX has successfully launched 12 satellites as part of its Starlink Direct-to-Cell (DTC) service, marking the completion of its first commercial orbital satellite constellation. This launch, which occurred on November 25, 2024, allows mobile phones to connect directly to satellites for internet service, bypassing traditional cell towers, particularly in underserved areas. Major telecommunications companies, including T-Mobile (U.S.), Rogers (Canada), One NZ (New Zealand), KDDI (Japan), Optus (Australia), and Salt (Switzerland), have partnered with Starlink to provide this service. As of 2023, approximately 2.6 billion people globally remain without internet access, representing about 33% of the world's population. The DTC service aims to bridge this connectivity gap by offering cost-effective solutions for mobile communication. Future developments include support for voice and data services, as well as IoT devices, expected to roll out in 2025.
