Chilpancingo Mayor Alejandro Arcos Decapitated Days After Taking Office; Municipal Secretary Also Murdered
Oct 7, 2024, 03:54 AM
Mayor Alejandro Arcos, a young and honest official who assumed office in Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, Mexico, less than a week ago, was found murdered and decapitated on Sunday. His remains were abandoned in a vehicle on the Tixtla bypass in the colonia Villas del Roble, east of the city. Arcos, affiliated with the PRI-PRD alliance, had won the municipal election on June 2 and took office on September 30. His assassination follows the killing of the municipal secretary, Francisco Tapia, who was murdered three days earlier. Arcos had been active in the community, recently visiting neighborhoods affected by Hurricane John. The state's governor confirmed the assassination. The leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Alejandro Moreno, demanded that federal authorities investigate, citing ingovernability in Guerrero and noting that organized crime does not change with government.
