Dikembe Mutombo, NBA Hall of Famer and Shot Blocker, Dies at 58 from Brain Cancer

Dikembe Mutombo, a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and former NBA Global Ambassador, passed away on September 30, 2024, at the age of 58 after a battle with brain cancer. Known for his defensive prowess, Mutombo was an eight-time NBA All-Star, four-time Defensive Player of the Year, six-time All-Defensive Team member, and second all-time in blocks with 3,289. He played for several teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets. Mutombo also made a significant impact at Georgetown University. Off the court, he was celebrated for his humanitarian work, particularly in his native Congo. He passed away surrounded by his family. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver described him as 'simply larger than life,' both on and off the court.
