Texas Supreme Court Upholds SB 14 Ban on Gender-Affirming Care for Minors in 8 to 1 Decision
Jun 28, 2024, 03:10 PM
The Texas Supreme Court has upheld a state law that prohibits doctors from prescribing gender-affirming care to transgender minors. The decision, delivered by Justice Rebeca Aizpuru Huddle in an 8 to 1 ruling, stated that the Legislature made a permissible, rational policy choice when they passed SB 14. The law, which bans puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for minors, was challenged by parents and medical professionals on constitutional grounds. The court ruled that the ban does not unconstitutionally deny or abridge equality under the law or violate parental rights. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton praised the decision, which was announced on June 28, 2024.
